It’s no secret that Fox’s last attempt at the Fantastic Four (before the rights went over to Disney) is not one of the most memorable of comic book-based films. As the superhero movie genre continues to evolve, what audiences are seeing are studios taking more and more risk, and giving their directors more freedom to make the movie they want – even if that means not worrying about the film’s performance at the box office or the movie connecting to the bigger cinematic universe. Without risk you wouldn’t have films like Birds of Prey, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Black Panther, Thor: Ragnarok, Joker, Logan or Deadpool.

Early on in the superhero landscape this wasn’t the case. If you look at films from directors like David Ayer (Suicide Squad) or Zack Snyder (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) who are just now able to talk about the original visions they had for the start of their DCEU films. Zack Snyder’s Justice League is coming to HBO Max in 2021, and there are many fans eager to see it. That being said, not all directors get that lucky. 

Director Josh Trank (who was 26 at the time) had just come off his work on the highly successful, Chronicle (starring Michael B. Jordan) before he helmed the Marvel Comics-based movie. At the time, Fox was focusing on bringing together their own cinematic universe and even went as far as taking a group photo at San Diego Comic Con which was meant to signify the X-Men, Gambit, the Fantastic Four and Deadpool all co-existing. 

Of course, with plans on such a grand scale, you can expect a lot of hands on the project – which seemed to be the case for Trank’s movie. During our interview with the director to talk about his upcoming film Capone, Trank told us over at First Cut about some of his original plans, including to make the Storm family all Black. However, the idea was met with pushback from higher ups at the studio. Let it be known, Trank doesn’t want another cut of his film released.
