BBC is producing a six-part miniseries of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables.

The last English language adaptation of the famous story was 2012’s critically-acclaimed film adaptation, directed by Tom Hooper, who incidentally directed Davies’ War & Peace mini-series. This adaptation of Les Mis is not to be expected to be a musical.

“Based on Victor Hugo’s iconic literary classic, the story centers on French convict Jean Valjean (West) and his struggles to escape his past while being hunted for years over a parole violation by Inspector Javert (Oyelowo), set against the backdrop of the uprising of 1832. Collins will star as Fantine.”

Adeel Akhtar (Ghosted, Victoria & Abdul) and Olivia Coleman (The Crown) will also be starring as Monsier and Madame Thénardier. Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals) and Erin Kellyman (Raised by Wolves) will play Cosette and Éponine. Josh O’Connor (God’s Own Country) rounds out this current round of casting as  Marius.

This six-part series will be written by Andrew Davies (War & Peace). No directors have been chosen yet. Filming will begin in February and take place in Belgium and Northern France.
