The casting decisions for the third season of Supergirl have been surprising in the last few weeks. As Geeks of Color previously reported, Calista Flockhart’s character Cat Grant will no longer be a series regular and future appearances of Superman, as portrayed by fan favorite Tyler Hoechlin, are still up in the air.

This is reflective of the show’s increased interest in Krypton and its remaining intergalactic denizens following the explosive season two finale. To accommodate these plot developments, Odette Annable was recently cast as new series villain Reign, a biological weapon created by Kara’s father Zor-El to be a ‘Worldkiller.’

And now, it looks like we’ll be seeing more of Kara’s family in the upcoming season – not her father, but her mother Alura Zor-El, who the show just recast with actress Erica Durance.

The seasoned actress has several critically acclaimed roles under her belt, the most famous being her portrayal of Lois Lane in The CW’s Superman inspired original series, Smallville.

The character of Alura, as well as her twin sister Astra, were portrayed by actress Laura Benanti during the first two seasons of Supergirl. However, according to executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, schedule conflicts during the production of season three prevented Benanti from returning to the show.

Yet Kreisberg expressed that he and fellow executive producer Greg Berlanti are confident about their decision to bring Durance onto the show in this recurring role:

“We are so blessed that Erica has come aboard to offer her own interpretation of Kara’s mother. We had tremendous success with a former Lois Lane last season with Teri Hatcher. We know Erica will continue the proud tradition of legacy actors joining our shows and creating new and exciting takes on classic DC characters.”

  1. Season 1 was amazing. Season 2…not so much. CW’s takeover has turned Supergirl into just another One Tree Hill.
