Independent media is about to get a major glow-up with The Comic Shop, a mockumentary sitcom series that brings authentic geek culture to the forefront.

Created by our friend Nigerian-American multi-hyphenate Cheyenne Ewulu, aka CheyenneTheGeek, this innovative series is launched its Kickstarter campaign on November 12, 2024, with a funding goal of $160,000. Following a successful festival run and viral proof-of-concept trailer, The Comic Shop is poised to capture the hearts of sitcom and comic book fans alike.

Set in a struggling comic book store, The Comic Shop follows four misfit friends as they navigate the challenges of keeping their business alive in the digital age. The series blends the workplace comedy style of The Office and Parks & Recreation with the authenticity of geek culture, all while showcasing an underrepresented side of the nerd community.

The ensemble cast features acclaimed talent, including voice actor Zeno Robinson (My Hero Academia, Young Justice), Cheyenne Ewulu (Ex Roommate), Shanae Cole (Grown-ish), and Grayson Niles (The Goldbergs, The Party). With humor, heart, and a celebration of fandom, the show promises to resonate with fans across the spectrum.

In a recent interview with Geeks of Color, Ewulu shared her vision for the series. “Growing up, I never saw people who looked like me represented in geek spaces, especially not on TV. The Comic Shop isn’t just about making people laugh – it’s about showing that nerd culture belongs to everyone, and our stories deserve to be told.”

The Kickstarter campaign offers unique rewards for backers, including opportunities to appear in the series, product placement options, and a Q&A session with Zeno Robinson. Stretch goals will pave the way for additional episodes, elevated production quality, and even an original theme song.

The production team DYNMC, known for their work with Green Day, The Oscars, and Hulu, is bringing top-tier production value to the project. With six planned episodes running up to 20 minutes each, The Comic Shop is set to redefine what’s possible for independent sitcoms.

Ewulu’s commitment to representation in geek culture is evident throughout her career. From her documentary Shades of Cosplay, which explored diversity in the cosplay community, to her work as a writer, actress, and creator, Ewulu is a powerful advocate for inclusion in fandom spaces. Her authentic voice and fresh approach make The Comic Shop a must-watch for fans of sitcoms, comic culture, and authentic storytelling.

The Kickstarter campaign launches today, and fans can join the journey to bring this groundbreaking series to life.
