Last week was a whirlwind of the best kind. I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Supergirl press junket.

Starring Milly Alcock as the titular character, alongside Eve Ridley as Ruthye and Jason Momoa as Lobo, Supergirl joins forces with an unlikely companion on an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice when an unexpected adversary strikes too close to home.

Based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series, the upcoming film is directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) and written by Ana Nogueira.

Ahead of the film’s release, I spoke with the one and only Jason Momoa about his time working on Supergirl, where his love of Lobo stems from, getting decked out in the Lobo costume and makeup, and what playing two iconic DC characters (Aquaman and Lobo) has meant to him.

Watch the full interview with Jason Momoa below:

Momoa hasn’t been shy about his love for Lobo, having wanted to portray this character for quite some time. Momoa told me about his introduction to the characters as a kid and what he enjoyed most about the character.

Momoa shared, “When I was a kid, I mean, I had my comic book store that was back in Iowa. I can’t remember the first comic it was, but there’s a handful of ones I collected, you know? I mean, like, we didn’t grow up with that much money, so I had like a couple things. Wolverine was huge, Crow was huge, and Lobo was huge for me. So, you like have your anti-heroes, they all kind of were the same little B, you know? They’re beastly, and I just, I identified with it. I loved everything about them, probably seeped into things that I love now.”

Momoa is no stranger to working on vast sets, but there is something to be said about playing a space motorcycle-riding bounty hunter that just hits differently.

Momoa said, “I mean, the first time I’ve ever had my team, we were just discussing this, my makeup artist over there, Jen, that was the first time everyone would call me Lobo. So it was the first time I kind of stayed in character, because everything’s covered, everything. Nothing on it was Jason, the hair, everything was gone, so yeah, everyone would make up hair, ladies, director, everybody’s called me Lobo, it was the first time I’ve ever got to do that, and it was fun, because I mean, you look in the mirror and you’re like, holy shit, it’s terrifying. And you just got to be exactly him without having to switch over.”

Lastly, it’s not every day someone gets to play two iconic DC characters, especially ones as vastly different as these. I had a gift for Momoa to commemorate this, but I also asked him what it meant for him to play Aquaman and now Lobo.

Momoa told me, “Aquaman was, I mean, it pretty much launched my career, put us on a map where we can start playing roles that, you know, we wanted to do, and it just paved the way. It also really exposed me to all things I really loved, which is the ocean, our environment, all the things that I cared about before I became an actor, and it really helped me still do those things in my life, working with the UN, all different types of things. And also just like the first time in my career, where kids are like, ‘Wow!’ you know? And it’s a very big responsibility. So that was great about that. And this guy is all for me, because I’m the fan, that’s who I want to play. And now I get to do something that I’m gonna do it right for me, and then hopefully everybody likes it.”

Supergirl hits theatres on June 26!
