Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen - Interview

A Minecraft Movie has taken theaters by storm!

Prior to the film’s release, Geeks of Color had the opportunity to chat with some of the cast and crew about their work on the movie, including Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen.

The two were eager to share their experience on the set of A Minecraft Movie, including the use of practical sets which enhanced their immersion into the Overworld.

Check out the full interview with Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen below:

In A Minecraft Movie, the world that Myers and Hansen got to play around in was incredible. As actors, we wondered some of the elements of production design that made them feel like they were really living in the Overworld.

“Well, a lot of our sets were actually really practical. So, especially like the mines, the village, the forests were all built up, and they were huge, and you could go in and mess with anything, and touch all the props and play with stuff. And, I think as an actor, that really helped, because you’re up against a green screen a lot of the time. But I think our production designer Grant Major did a fantastic job with it,” Myers explained.

In the movie, there is a reference to Technoblade. Hansen was the reason that the Technoblade reference happened in the movie. Adding this was something that Hansen felt was important to the Minecraft gaming community, and should be part of the film.

“I remember watching his videos when they were around, like, right, you know, when they came out…and I think it was definitely hard…But I think that when we were doing that one scene, there’s a scene in the movie, you know, and we’re walking to the village, and something happens, of course, but I just pitched to Jared, and I told him about it, and he was like, ‘You know, let’s make that happen.’ So now it’s in the movie, and I’m definitely happy,” Hansen shared.

Something that is always difficult to do when adapting a game into a movie is satisfying the fans of the game. As a Minecraft player, we asked Hansen if he thought fans of the game would enjoy the movie.

“I think that you know, if you play Minecraft, and you’ve been playing it, and you watch the people and definitely like that, there’s such a fun element to Minecraft that I think we, as you know, a team, get to collaborate and capture in this movie. And I think that all of us, kind of you know, we know that Minecraft is just a big fun game. I think we get to show that, yeah,” Hansen said.

A Minecraft Movie is now playing in theaters!
