The John Wick universe is expanding once again—and this time, it’s with one of its most recent yet unforgettable characters taking the reins.

During the Lionsgate presentation at CinemaCon they officially announced that action icon Donnie Yen will not only reprise his role as the lethal and complex Caine, first introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4, but will also direct the upcoming standalone film.

Set to begin production later this year in Hong Kong, the untitled project will continue Caine’s storyline following the events of Chapter 4, where he was finally freed from his obligations to the High Table. While plot details are still under wraps, the film promises to lean into the Hong Kong-style action filmmaking that Yen helped popularize across the globe—infused with the world-building and sleek brutality fans expect from the John Wick franchise.

Donnie Yen: Star, Director, Action Legend

Known globally for his work in the Ip Man series, Flashpoint, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Yen’s influence on martial arts cinema spans decades. His recent turn as Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4 became an instant fan favorite—an assassin with emotional depth, style, and devastating precision. His directorial resume includes the acclaimed wuxia film Sakra and The Prosecutor, which scored a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

“The John Wick films have set an immensely high standard for action filmmaking, and I greatly appreciate Lionsgate giving me the opportunity to further elevate the franchise,” Yen said in a statement. “I am both thrilled and deeply inspired to make this happen.”

A Franchise-Backed Powerhouse Production

The film is backed by the same powerhouse team that built the John Wick universe from the ground up: Basil Iwanyk and EricaLee of Thunder Road, and franchise architect ChadStahelski through his 87Eleven Entertainment banner. Yen will also serve as executiveproducer, bringing his intimate understanding of the character and genre to the director’s chair.

Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on the upcoming The Batman: Part II and BRZRKR adaptation, has been tapped to write the screenplay. Tomlin builds on a previous draft penned by Robert Askins.

A Vision for a Modern Kung-Fu Classic

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson praised the decision, stating, “Donnie is not only an incredible, charismatic star, but a smart, cinematic director who knows how to deliver massively entertaining action for a global audience.”

Stahelski added, “We envision a modern-day kung-fu classic that explores the John Wick world. Who better to helm it than Donnie Yen himself?”

With a team this stacked, expectations are sky-high. Yen’s Caine spin-off is poised to bring an intimate, action-forward expansion of the franchise that could rival its predecessors in scale and impact.

What’s Next in the Wick-Verse?

The next installment in the John Wick universe is Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, set to release June 6, 2025. Directed by LenWiseman, the spinoff follows a deadly ballerina trained in the Ruska Roma tradition, connecting directly with events from John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

As for the Caine feature, fans can expect a stylish, emotionally charged, martial arts-driven chapterthat continues to push the boundaries of the John Wick Universe. Stay tuned for more updates as production kicks off later this year.
