Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the beloved animated show, Avatar: The Last Airbender, is finally here!
Showrunner Albert Kim takes on a whole new cast to portray our favorite team Avatar of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko. Although, their experience in front of the camera ranges from veteran young actor to up and comer, their accurate portrayal of the original animated characters is undeniable.
I had the chance to speak to them and ask them about the first time they realized they were truly in an Avatar show, and what they’re looking forward to in a potential season two!
Check out the full interview with the Avatar: The Last Airbender series cast below:
Kiawentiio, the actress who plays Katara, was the first to jump in, “I feel like after doing the test screenings. That was like the first time getting all completely done up, of hair and makeup. And you know, wardrobe and seeing yourself alongside all the other characters. It’s mind blowing.”
“I’d have to go with when I first booked the role, and Albert Kim had sent us the scripts,” added Dallas Liu, the upcoming Zuko. “It went Aang, Katara, and then you go down the list, Sokka, go down the list again, you see Zuko and then my name was there and I think that’s when I felt, ‘I’m really doing this.’”
“Ima steal your thing,” Gordon Cormier, the actor who portrays Aang told Dallas, “That was so awesome to see. Seeing all the character names brought it to life in my mind.”
Ian Ousley, who plays Sokka, followed up, “I think for me, I got to see my boomerang before I did my fitting, so seeing the boomerang for the first time was like, ‘Wow. This is real.’”

Next, I wanted to find out what moment the cast was most excited to adapt in a potential season two.
“I think the finale of Book Two is super exciting,” Kiawentiio answered, “that’s something I’m excited to tackle as an actor. Like that big showdown and especially the betrayal between Katara and Zuko, that’s exciting to me.”
Gordon answered, “I’d be really excited for the scene where Toph is in -it’s like a spirit forest. Oh, the swamp! Where Aang starts seeing visions of Toph in the swamp. And then we see her and we meet her. Yeah, it’s gonna be awesome to shoot and just watch in general.”
Ian stepped in, “I think there’s only one answer to this question. We all know what’s in season two. Give me the cactus juice, bro.”
Dallas finished up with his answer, “For me, I feel like I don’t really need to explain it but Zuko alone.”
I added that Zuko’s journey really takes shape in Book Two so that should be fun for Liu.
