The highly anticipated second part of Zack Snyder’s epic space opera, Rebel Moon, begins streaming on Netflix this week.

Leading up to the release of Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, I had the opportunity to speak with writer-director Zack Snyder to talk about the film and his process of bringing the sci-fi actioner to life.

I spoke with Snyder about the physicality of the performances in Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, the music and score of the film, the upcoming extended cuts and other genres of filmmaking he would like to explore.

In an action-heavy sci-fi film, stunts are an element of the filmmaking process that Zack Snyder knows well having directed other films such as 300, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and of course, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire.

About the stunts in the film, Snyder shared, “Yeah, you know, I guess for me, I’ve always been super hands on with sort of physicality of the films. And, you know, because the story and action in my movies is so, so linked, it’s almost – there’s no difference, you know? There’s no like, ‘Oh, we start the action sequence, and the story can wait.’ It’s all part of it. You know, Freddy, who was the stunt coordinator did an amazing job and I’ve known him for years. And so it was really seamless and easy to work with him. My son, Eli was the second unit director. So, you know, really imagine the very close conversations there. And so yeah, so it’s just, to me, it’s just one of the many tools and sort of the language of the movie.”

Snyder’s films always have great musicality – whether that be through the score, characters singing or the soundtrack and the director revealed that music has always been a big inspiration for him through his filmmaking journey.

“I just think music is such a powerful tool in in filmmaking. And I’ve always been super inspired by music throughout my career. I would like, you know, make a mixtape or whatever, before I shoot, and sometimes, I’ll burn a CD and give it to the crew and be like, ‘Oh, listen to this to getcha inspired.’ And they’re like, ‘Is this is in the movie?’ I’m like, ‘Nah, it’s not in the movie, but it just gets you inspired!’ So yeah, it’s just fun. I just think music plays such an important part,” Snyder said.

Of course, we now know that there will be R-rated extended cuts of both Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver coming to Netflix soon and the writer-director was excited to share more about the director’s cuts of these two films and when fans can expect to see them.

“So the extended cuts, I think are going to come out at the end of the summer; they’ll come out together. Really, it was, you know, in a lot of ways, it’s why I made the movie was to get these director’s cuts, because it’s really what I wrote. I wrote a pretty hard R-rated crazy space opera that was completely over the top and insane. And I really, the cool thing about Netflix was they understood that in order to get to that. I mean, I feel like the first conversations were like, ‘What could we cut to get to that?’ And then I feel like we we ended up in this place where even before we were filming that they were like, ‘Okay, well, if you can deliver us these two hour versions that are PG-13, you can do whatever you want with your director’s cut. And I said, ‘Okay that’s a deal, I’ll do that.’ And so, I’m very proud of these versions of the movie but I think at the end of the summer you’ll see what we really were going for,” Snyder shared.

Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver begins streaming on Netflix on April 19.
