Last year, Warner Bros. released three films directed by women. Deadline reports that the studio has been “very vocal about wanting to employ another female director for yet another strong female superhero,” film specifically Supergirl. Looking to expand the DC universe the studio is currently developing Batgirl and a Birds of Prey/Harley Quinn film produced by Margot Robbie.

The superhero genre has given the film industry beloved characters, epic action sequences, award-winning cinematography, as well as a female director who helmed Warner Bros. highest grossing summer film, Wonder Woman.

Although not the first woman to direct a film, Patty Jenkins’ success with Wonder Woman has changed the direction and vision for Warner Bros. which had been previously criticized for its lack of films helmed by women.

However, the call for women directors goes beyond comic book movies. Warner Bros. is currently co-producing bestselling novel The Sun Is Also a Star. Ry Russo Young is directing with Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton serving as the film’s producers.

Warner Bros. is currently working alongside female directors:

    • Andrea Berloff
    • Ava DuVernay
    • Patty Jenkins
    • Tracy Oliver
    • Cathy Yan
    • Jennifer Yuh Nelson
    • Ry Russo Young
