If you aren’t familiar with Discord, it is an online server designed for the gaming community that allows those members to chat over text, video, and audio between user channels.  Since its release in 2015, Discord has grown in popularity and use amongst the gaming community due to its user-friendly interface.

And since Discord has served the gaming community for the past few years, it has finally dropped into the video games sales business.  On August 9, 2018, Discord released a beta program in Canada with free games for paid members as well as a traditional digital retail store for users to peruse.  Those selected users will get to see an updated version of Discord Nitro with all these new features.  Users get to access a curated selection of games alongside their current subscription perks.  Not only that, they also get to experience the new tab on the home screen, the new Discord Store, and individual games that users can purchase.

Not only that, Discord is also launching a universal game-launching tab that will launch any game on a user’s computer from Discord without the game requiring a launching program or having the user search for the game.

Discord’s chief marketing officer Eros Resmini told Variety, “We wanted to build an amazing platform that people wanted to use every day and we wanted to grow that platform before focusing too much on monetization. We now have 150 million users, so timing felt right. We knew we didn’t want to sell ads or user data, so we had two options left: cosmetics or content. Nitro was our attempt at cosmetics, now we’re adding games to that subscription and building a retail store too.”

As of now, it is unsure of how long the beta will run in Canada before it is open to the rest of the Discord community.  Games thus far of this advanced Discord Nitro include: “Saints Row: The Third,” “Metro: Last Light Redux,” “Darksiders: Warmastered Edition,” “De Blob,” “Tormentor X Punisher,” “Dandara,” “Kathy Rain,” “GoNNER,” “Kingdom: New Lands,” “System Shock Enhanced Edition,” and “Super Meat Boy.”  The retail store for now includes “Dead Cells,” “Frostpunk,” “Omensight,” “Into the Breach,” “SpellForce 3,” “The Banner Saga 3,” “Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire,” “Hollow Knight,” “Moonlighter,” “This is the Police 2,” and “Starbound.”
