Nicole Maines Cast as TV’s First Transgender Superhero Nia Nal in ‘Supergirl’ #SDCC2018

Back in 2013, Nicole Maines made global headlines when she took part in the landmark Maine Supreme Court Case which ruled that under the state’s Human Rights Act, transgender people had the right to use the bathroom of their personal preference. Well Maines is making headlines once again and it’s getting even more “super”.

The twenty-one year old activist will be joining the cast of The CW’s Supergirl as Nia Nal or “Dreamer”, TV’s first transgender superhero. The character is currently being described as a “soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others”. Nia is a twist on DC Comics’ Nura Nal (aka Dream Girl), who has the ability to predict the deaths of others, though it is not specfically stated in the comics whether or not the character is transgender.

Maines has previously been featured in the HBO documentary The Trans List and has previously acted on USA Network’s Royal Pains.
