Spider-Man’s inclusion in Marvel Studios’ film universe has proven to be nothing short of very successful. Sony co-owns the rights to the character and to no surprise, they want to utilize their half of the Spidey rights under the new booming brand. Their first attempt will come this October with the release of Venom. Their second attempt was supposed to be Silver and Black, a live-action film centered around Silver Sable and Black Cat, but that has now been put indefinitely on hold. News on Sony’s plans has been quiet since Silver and Black’s release date was pulled, but Deadline has just added fueled the fire with a new reveal. Sony is developing a film centered around the popular Korean-American marvel heroin Silk!

Sony producer Amy Pascal is currently heading the project under her wing with the studio. This is all the site could reveal for all other information is being kept well under wraps. For those unfamiliar with Silk, her real name is Cindy Moon and she was a fellow student in Peter Parker’s class who also got bit by a radioactive spider around the same time as him. Her powers are very unique when compared to those of all the other spider-like heroes in marvel. She may not be as physically strong as Peter, but she has a far more advanced spider-sense that she calls silk-sense. She shoots spider webs out of her fingertips and sports an eidetic memory (extremely more detailed than having a photographic memory). Cindy Moon was birthed by writer Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramos in 2014 and has since carried her own popular solo series.

Even though Sony co-owns Spidey’s film rights, it is great to see that they are choosing to focus on the diverse characters in this small pool. However, it is still unclear if these Spider-Man related films will be connected to Tom Holland’s Spidey and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One can bet that if Venom proves to be a critical and financial success, then these Sony spin-offs are more likely to be MCU canon. Actress Tiffany Espensen is credited as Cindy Moon in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War. She can be seen as one of Peter’s fellow decathlon teammates. Is the Silk film in development going to use the MCU version of the character already seen or create a new one? All of these confusing questions could be answered in the Fall after Venom is released. Until then, fans can only celebrate that a diverse character like Silk has the feature film treatment in the works.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a really good first step in debuting the diverse spider characters on screen. Making a film centered around Silk is the next logical and progressive step (Spider-Gwen can definitely wait). How excited are you for this project?
