Fans of the ’80s are gonna want to take a look at this. Avalanche Studios, the team behind the Just Cause series, Mad Max, and the upcoming Rage 2, has announced a brand-new game, called Generation Zero. Generation Zero is an open-world action game set in 1980s Sweden. Avalanche was just purchased last month by one of the oldest film studios in the world, Nordisk Film, from Denmark.

The game’s trailer shows a group of stereotypical ’80s kids fighting off mechanized monsters with small arms and explosives. The action is reminiscent of movies like Red Dawn, but it’s also similar to Tales from the Loop, an alternative history tabletop roleplaying game also out of Sweden, one that was notably inspired by E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and Stranger Things.

Avalanche says that players will be able to go it alone, or coordinate with up to three other players in seamless co-operative multiplayer. The trailer includes a host of military-style weapons, including sniper rifles, hand grenades and a recoilless rifle.

The synopsis for the game reads:

“Experience an explosive game of cat and mouse set in a vast open world. In this reimagining of 1980’s Sweden, hostile machines have invaded the serene countryside, and you need to fight back!

Go it alone, or team-up with up to three of your friends in seamless co-op multiplayer. By utilizing battle tested guerrilla tactics, you’ll be able to lure, cripple, or destroy enemies in intense, creative sandbox skirmishes.”

The game’s official website says that Generation Zero is being built on the Apex engine. The open world will include a full day/night cycle, and weapons will have realistic ballistic properties. Damage to enemies will be persistent, so larger robots can be wounded or crippled and returned to later to deliver the final blow.

Avalanche has said more news, information, screenshots, gameplay footage, and livestreams will come in the following months. The trailer also teases an upcoming Steam page.
