Yes… you read that correctly! We are indeed getting a live action film based on the video game featuring the speedy, sneaker wearing hedgehog, Sonic. Paramount Pictures bought the film rights back in 2017 and now we are steps closer to seeing the movie fully realized on the big screen.

James Marsden has already been cast as the male lead for the film which will be helmed by new director Jeff Fowler based on a script from screenwriters Josh Miller and Patrick Casey. Now, a report from Variety confirms that Tika Sumpter is in final negotiations to star as the female lead in the film.

Tika Sumpter is no stranger to lead roles as she has portrayed figures like Michelle Obama in Southside With You or as the manipulative Candace Young in the OWN original series The Haves and The Have Nots. We are excited to see what Tika brings to the overall story when the times comes. The videogame has sold more than 360 million copies in both packaged and digital content since its release in 1991. This will be the first time the game is adapted into a live-action adaption. Are you a fan of Tika? Excited to see her on the big screen again? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
