Academy Award winning actor, Jamie Foxx is set to star as the titular character in the upcoming Spawn film from Blumhouse.

Foxx will portray Al Newman, a CIA black ops agent who is betrayed by his comrades who kill him and set his body on fire. He is convinced to become a Hellspawn warrior when it is promised that he will be reunited with his wife. But upon his return to earth, he learns that his wife has moved on and is now married to his best friend.

So, needless to say – Al Newman a.k.a Spawn does not lead a charmed life. But this doesn’t stop the antihero from saving the world one evildoer at a time, with battles spanning on earth, heaven and hell.

Spawn creator, Todd McFarlane will make his directorial debut for the film. McFarlane expects the budget for the film to be an estimated $10 – $12 million and for the film to be rated R. McFarlane also said the film would not focus on Spawn’s origin story, telling Deadline, “I’ve got a trilogy in mind here, and I’m not inclined in this first movie to do an origin story. I’m mentally exhausted from origin stories.”

McFarlane also explained that he believes his character will be a man of few words. The creator said, “The scariest movies, from Jaws to John Carpenter’s The Thing, or The Grudge and The Ring, the boogeyman doesn’t talk.”

McFarlane revealed that he had a meeting with Foxx five years ago, where Foxx had an idea about Spawn and that when he began to work on the script, he still had Foxx in mind for the role.

Head of Blumhouse, Jason Blum is just as excited about the pairing. “We are thrilled Jamie Foxx will be playing the title role in our movie adaptation of Spawn,” he said in a statement. “He is an incredible actor and a huge fan of the Spawn Universe that Todd McFarlane created. With the depth of talent Jamie can commit to the role and Todd at the helm bringing the world of Spawn to life, we could not be more excited for this film.”
