Lena Waithe (Ready Player One, The Chi, Master of None) will be honoured with the Trailblazer Award at the upcoming 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards for her work in the world of entertainment.

The Trailblazer Award celebrates and recognizes those who are here to change the rules in the entertainment business with “fresh and fearless voices”, and Lena Waithe made it into history books as the first woman of colour to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series thanks to her work on Netflix’ Master of None.

Other works of Waithe include her recent participation in Ready Player One as well as her involvement as writer, creator and executive producer of Showtime’s The Chi, a coming-of-age series.

Amy Doyle, general manager of MTV, VH1 and Logo, released in a statement why Lena was being awarded with this recognition.

“Lena is shaking up Hollywood and breaking cultural boundaries through her innovative and authentic storytelling. Her unwavering passion for equality and inclusion make her the perfect recipient for this year’s Trailblazer Award.”

The 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards will air this upcoming Monday, June 18 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, with Tiffany Haddish as the host.
