The True Colors Fund is an organization dedicated to offering aid for disadvantaged youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Founded by Cyndi Lauper, their efforts specifically center on homeless LGBT youth, as estimations suggest 40% of homeless youth in American identify as LGBT. This staggering statistic encourages those who work with the True Colors Fund to “reduce that disproportionate percentage from 40% to none.” Following this year’s ClexaCon, wherein LGBT fans congregate to celebrate the characters and actors that represent them on screen, fans of Supergirl’s Sanvers (the couple name for Alex Danvers and Maggie Sawyer) were inspired to take action as well.

During ClexaCon’s “Alex Danvers” panel, Supergirl’s Chyler Leigh revealed that upwards of 70% of the scenes her and Floriana Lima (Maggie Sawyer) filmed never made it screen. This revelation unearthed concerns about the development of Maggie’s character, who was kicked out as a teenager upon her parents’ learning of her sexuality. Unease in this regard initially surfaced after the couple broke off their engagement. Now Sanvers fans are using the momentum surrounding this rejuvenated discourse to help youth whose personal stories resemble that of Detective Sawyer.

The Maggie Sawyer Matters fundraiser launched on the True Colors Fund on April 12. An excerpt from the page’s mission statement reads, “We’ve decided to fundraise and make this donation in [Maggie’s] name. Every Maggie Sawyer out there deserves our help.” Thus far, their efforts have experienced meteoric success; at the time of writing, over $6,100 USD has been raised.

The fundraiser even garnered the attention of Lima, who took to Twitter to applaud the impressive work of the fan community.

While Maggie’s tragic character arc may suggest otherwise, the passion of fans and the kindness of strangers who honor what she represents evinces one absolute: Maggie Sawyer is enough. This holds true for anyone, young or old, suffering in a manner similar to that which was depicted during season two and three of Supergirl. Hopefully, the efforts of True Colors Fund and others will bring them closer to the refuge and love they deserve.
