Fans of the 2014 sci-fi/action film Edge of Tomorrow have been waiting for the long discussed sequel to become a reality.

In the past, scheduling issues among stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, along with writer Christopher McQuarrie and director Doug Liman have delayed the project.

Liman told Collider those problems have been resolved and the team is just waiting on the script.

“We’re just working on the script…now it’s down to we have a window where we could go do it, and we’re frantically working on the script,” he said. “It’s one of those movies that we’ll only go make if we love the script. It’s not one of those things where the studio is pushing us to make it and they don’t really care if it’s good or not.”

Edge of Tomorrow starred Cruise and Blunt as soldiers reliving the same day over as they die battling alien creatures. In each loop they try to learn from their mistakes to figure out how to defeat the enemy for good.

“If the movie happens, it will be because Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise and myself are passionate about making it, which is a great place to be,” Liman continued. “She doesn’t need this movie, he doesn’t need this movie, and I don’t need it. We’re gonna make it if we really believe in it. We have a story that the three of us love, so we’re working hard on the script.”

The director is in post-production on his latest movie Chaos Walking, so he’s eyeing Edge of Tomorrow 2 as his next project.

“It could be. It has the possibility of being my next film,” said Liman.

Fans of Liman’s work can see Chaos Walking starring Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland when it hits theaters March 1, 2019.
