When X-Men was first introduced on the big screen back in 2000, it set the standard for the type of quality comicbook films needed to be taken seriously by Hollywood. Throughout its near twenty year run, the X-Franchise has had many stumbles but has managed to set a new standard with the release of their critically acclaimed R-Rated superhero films Deadpool and Logan.
Now the expanded mutant universe is covering new ground with the release of The New Mutants the first ever superhero horror film. It’s a unique take on a classic genre and when speaking with USA Today, director Josh Boone explained that the film will be much more grounded than the other X-Men films. “These kids could care less about being X-Men. They’re so messed up and have had such horrible things happen, they’re just trying to figure out how to get out of this situation. We just tried to pull it back and make it more performance and character driven, and more grounded and credible than X-Men movies ever are.”
Based on the 1984 comic The Demon Bear Saga written by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, The New Mutants follows five young mutants; Dani Moonstar, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Sunspot and Magik, who are students at Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters as they try to escape a secret facility where they are being held against their will. As they come to terms with their own mutant abilities, they must also confront the sins of their pasts.
The New Mutants blasts into theaters April 13, 2018.
