So it seems like Star Trek Discovery is going to have a long and prosper live at CBS after all, as the network has confirmed that a second season is on its way.

According to Marc DeBevoise, president and CEO of CBS Interactive, Star Trek: Discovery set a record for subscriber sign-ups on their platform, with new users every day for the last couple of weeks since it aired.

“In just six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise. This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the Star Trek legacy. We are extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series.”

Although a second season has been confirmed, CBS All Access has yet to determine a return date and episode count for season two.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Alex Kurtzman talked about the “challenging path to the screen”  and mentioned that the premiere of a second season would “ideally” return “on the early side of 2019.”  According to Kurtzman,  every episode takes three to four months to air, as production and VFX take a lot of time.  For example, production on the season-one finale was underway when the show premiered, six weeks ago.

No matter how long it’ll take for us to enjoy a season two of this show, is good news after all, as it is an engaging show with an interesting plot and stories left to be told.
