It seems like yesterday when critics and general audiences were bashing the live action adaption of Spawn starring Michael Jai White. The comic book garnered a cult following but the on-screen film didn’t quite live up to the hype. But now is the time for redemption as film reboots are the trend in Hollywood now. Which is why Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, has been tapped to write and direct the film’s reboot.

Not much is known about the film, but while speaking to Yahoo Entertainment at New York Comic Con, McFarlane explained that Spawn will definitely NOT be an origin story. Check out his comment below:

“I always come back to Jaws – not that I have a shark in Spawn! But that shark was enormous. And at anytime in the movie, did they tell me why the shark was so damn big? No! Did it matter to me? No! All that mattered was that it was big and in the same vicinity as humans. Or John Carpenter’s The Thing: where do the aliens come from? I don’t know! What was its reason for taking over bodies? I don’t know! It just was. I’m okay without an origin. Just give me a compelling story, scare the shit out off me from time to time, and I’m along for the ride… To me, this story is my way of saying, ‘Spawn’s been around for 25 years, and he’s been evolving for 25 years. This is where he’s at now’. I can’t do the same story over and over.”

McFarlane definitely makes a good point. Many movies have suffered from trying to establish irrelevant origins at the expense of a good story or character development.
