Hearing Joss Whedon’s name will make any fanboy stand at attention to hear what follows. While he gets tons of notoriety for his role as director and writer for the first two installments of the Avenger’s films, he also is the man responsible for cult classic television shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. For the past ten years, comic book fans have strictly associated Joss Whedon with the MCU, but times are changing as Joss has crossed over to Warner Brother’s expanding DCEU.

The DCEU now has four installments underneath their belt with the fifth, Justice League, on the horizon. Enter Joss Whedon who was hired to conduct some re-shoots for the film, and was also hired to bring a prominent member of the DC comic book world to life, Batgirl.

Barbara Gordon a.k.a. Batgirl is a member of the Bat Family. She is one of three members of the Bat Family to receive the green light for a solo film. The other members are the Dark Knight himself along with fan favorite Night Wing a.k.a. Dick Grayson.

While no casting news has been announced for the Batgirl production, we know we could be close to an announcement as Geoff Johns has announced Whedon will begin working on the project in 2018 during an interview with IGN at SDCC.

“But for Batman what I will say is that Batman is more than just Batman and, you know, it’s been way too long since we’ve seen, you know, an expansion of that universe, and Batgirl – we are doing Batgirl with Joss Whedon, it’s going to be super exciting. He’s going to start that next year, and that’s just the start.”

This is exciting news, but it is not definitive on a start time in 2018 or even what Whedon will begin working on. Regardless, it may be awhile until we see what Whedon has in store for us.

WB is set to go today at SDCC at 2:30pm eastern in Hall H where more light may be shed on the Batgirl situation. Until then, let us know what you think of this development in the comment section below!

  1. I dont think youd be quite so happy about this if you’d seen that Wonder WOman script he penned. I have mixed feelings about this after reading it. I dont hate him, but he’s maybe not the best choice to write about women anymore, as his philosphies are mostly out of date.
