Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of the manga and anime Death Note has been met with legions of disappointing reactions by both critics and fans. The adaptation has changed the setting from Japan to Seattle and has an all-American cast.

The recent poster hands the spotlight to the character L, and will mostly gain the same reactions as previous announcements:

The fan-favorite detective L was known to be cunning and silent in his sleuthing, aiming to track down Light and his murderous abilities. In the trailer for the adaptation, it seems they’ve directed the character to be more outgoing and sociable. Also, the new poster has L clad in a hood and bandana, a different aesthetic from his original outfitting.

Director Adam Wingard has promised that the Netflix version of the Japanese phenomenon will stay true to the roots of the series, still portraying the “cat and mouse chase between Light and L, the themes of good, evil, and what’s in between the gray area.”

The new film stars Nat Wolff as Light Turner, Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton, Keith Stanfield as L, Paul Nakauchi as Watari, Shea Whigham as James Turner and Willem Dafoe as Ryuk.
