Idris Elba Set to Return in Season Five of ‘Luther’
Despite his ever growing slate of projects, Idris Elba will return to one of his most popular roles in season five of Luther.
Elba plays the hard-hitting DCI John Luther as he investigates some of London’s most heinous crimes.
“Neil, the BBC and I have been talking about a further season and I am thrilled that we have been able to bring it all together. I look forward to putting the coat back on,” said Elba
Creator/writer Neil Cross is also set to return for the new season, which will continue to air on BBC and BBC America.
“Now what? It’s a question Idris and I get asked a lot. What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood-red London? It can’t be over, can it? There’s so much we don’t know. So much unfinished business,” said Cross.
“In the end, we picked up the phone to some old friends and asked if they’d like to find out what happens next. It turns out, they would. So that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to find out what happens next,” said Cross.

Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan and Idris Elba as John Luther in Luther.
Season four consisted of one long TV movie, so here’s hoping season five will give fans more to chew on. Since the new season has just been announced there is no word on what other cast members might be returning. However, Luther is not the same without Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan.
Filming is expected to start in early 2018. No premiere date has been announced yet.
In the meantime, fans can get their Idris Elba fix in The Dark Tower, which opens Aug. 4 and Thor: Ragnarok Nov. 3.
So are you excited about Luther’s return? Will the new episodes be appointment viewing?
