Though they will finally meet up in Avengers: Infinity War, the Guardians of the Galaxy have lived in a separate cosmic universe from the rest of the MCU. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 fans got a glimpse at some of the other characters who inhabit that universe.

In an interview with IGN, writer/director James Gunn discussed how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will lead to more stories in the cosmic universe.

Apparently Gunn and Marvel president Kevin Feige have talked about expanding the MCU’s cosmic universe.

“We talk about it all the time. It’s already a part of what I’m doing with Marvel and the conversations that Kevin and I have every day,” said Gunn. “When we’re talking about Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and that story, that’s a story that will lead to other stories. It’s innate to the DNA that that’s the end of a trilogy but it’s the beginning of a whole other element of the Marvel Cosmic universe. That’s a part of what I’m doing now.”

Gunn has previously stated that Vol. 3 will be the conclusion of the current Guardians story.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 fans got a deeper insight into the Ravagers code and were introduced to the Sovereign. Gunn specifically pointed out aliens who were seen briefly when Rocket, Kraglin and Yondu were making their hundreds of jumps to Ego’s planet.

“They’re called Kronans, is what they are, and they’re specific characters. You might see them somewhere else in the future,” he said.

Before Gunn starts working on the Guardians third adventure, he is busy with Avengers: Infinity War, which is out May 4, 2018.
