It’s a simple wish, one that many a Marvel fan has dreamed about while growing up: becoming an Avenger.

According to Tom Holland, the latest actor to play Peter Parker in the upcoming movie Spider-Man: Homecoming, this relatable goal is what sets his interpretation of the legacy character apart from his cinematic predecessors.

In a Facebook Live interview with Yahoo Movies, Holland describes his character’s motivations as such:

I think the difference now is that Peter Parker finally has an all-time goal, and his goal is to become an Avenger. Everything he does, even though he’s doing it for the right reasons, is done so that one day he can become an Avenger and prove himself to Tony Stark. And I think we’ve never really seen Spider-Man with that kind of motivation before.

He’s not wrong. Based on the new film’s trailers alone, Peter Parker is seen chasing after his dream to become an Avenger with a single-minded focus that is just a little surprising to fans of the previous Spider-Man movies. But Homecoming presents many valid reasons to explain this Peter’s behavior.

One reason is his age. The Peter Parker viewers will soon meet in Homecoming is the youngest we’ve seen him yet, even if he’s one high school grade and about two years younger than Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of a graduating senior in The Amazing Spider-Man.

What’s more, this Peter has clearly grown up within the exciting world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We saw firsthand how palpably geeked out he was meeting heroes like Iron Man and Captain America in Captain America: Civil War, even if these fantasy encounters happened during battle.

Meanwhile, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield acted as Spider-Men in fictional universes curiously disconnected from any mention of other superheroes. We can blame the 15-year long copyright issues between Sony and Marvel for this isolation, sure, but this new film does indeed leave Holland’s Spider-Man in a unique and interesting position as a result.

At the very least, it justifies why the new Peter Parker is so desperate for approval from Tony Stark.

He is a young kid on the cusp of adulthood, given a sliver of a chance to be great just like all his childhood heroes… and, like many of us if we were in his position, he won’t allow that chance to slip through his web.
