Geeks of Color received first-look photos and premiere details for the second season of Diarra From Detroit from Paramount+.
Diarra Brickland wanted a quiet summer. Detroit had other plans. Paramount+ has set a July 29 premiere for Diarra From Detroit Season 2, and the first look says the chaos is bigger this time. The eight-episode season drops two episodes on Wednesday, July 29, then rolls out one new episode every Wednesday through September 9.
If you slept on the first season, this is your warning. Season 1 took a simple premise, a woman getting ghosted by a Tinder date, and spun it into a 1995 cold case that pulled all of Detroit in. We gave it a 9.5 out of 10. Diarra From Detroit is one of the purest fun shows the culture has put out, and Season 2 is loading up the guest list to match.
What Season 2 of Diarra From Detroit is about

Creator, writer, and star Diarra Kilpatrick is back as Diarra Brickland, the substitute teacher who cannot stop turning her own life into a case file. Season 2 finds her trying to have a hot girl summer and failing immediately. A simple furniture recovery favor turns into a triple homicide investigation, a citywide treasure hunt, and another trip through Detroit’s underbelly.
Along the way, she goes undercover with a secret society, lands a role in a Tubi movie, chases down urban legends, dodges gang warfare, and uncovers secrets buried beneath the city. Her relationship status stays as messy as the mystery. That mix of romance, comedy, and crime is the whole appeal. The show treats Detroit like a character, not a backdrop.
A guest list that does the talking

The core cast returns. Kilpatrick leads alongside DomiNque Perry, Bryan Terrell Clark, and Jon Chaffin, with Shannon Wallace, Phylicia Rashad, and Harry Lennix back for more.
Then there is the run of guest stars. Season 2 brings in Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Morris Chestnut, Glynn Turman, Bokeem Woodbine, Amber Riley, Lil Rel Howery, Lovie Simone, Shoniqua Shandai, Nicco Annan, Skilla Baby, Icewear Vezzo, Chris “CP” Powell, and Jude Demorest. That is a who’s-who of Black film, TV, and Detroit’s own music scene in one season. The booking alone tells you how much pull this show has built in one run.
Why Diarra From Detroit Season 2 matters

Season 1 was not a quiet success. It holds a 100 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and ranked as the No. 1 new series on cable among Black viewers during its run. Rolling Stone called it a “star-making showcase.” Variety tagged it a “hilariously chaotic P.I. drama with flair.” Deadline, Rolling Stone, and The Hollywood Reporter all named it a Top 10 show of the year.
In our Season 1 review, we said the show carved out its own place in the TV comedy landscape and that Kilpatrick’s breakout looked a lot like what Insecure did for Issa Rae. We scored it a 9.5. The jokes never stopped, the mystery kept its hooks in, and the cast around Kilpatrick made the whole thing sing.
The awards followed. The series picked up NAACP Image Award and Independent Spirit Award nominations, and Kilpatrick won a Gracie Award for Actress in a Breakthrough Role. After the renewal, a second season was never really in doubt. The question was how big it would get. The answer is in the cast list.
The series is executive produced by Kilpatrick, Kenya Barris, and Miles Orion Feldsott, who also serves as showrunner. It is produced by BET Studios and Khalabo Ink Society.
