Marvel has a major upcoming project in 2026 that promises some massive changes and a new chapter in the 18-year-running cinematic universe. However, with Doomsday on the horizon, a new MCU show is releasing now: the Spotlight series, Wonder Man.

Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley, the show follows a working actor who finds himself in the crosshairs of the Department of Damage Control while he tries to get the role of a lifetime. While the show may not fit the MCU formula as well as previous shows, Wonder Man‘s uniqueness makes it a clear standout in the MCU series catalogue and is undoubtedly one of the best Marvel shows.

Right away, Wonder Man stands apart from other MCU shows. The series follows struggling actor Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who strikes an unlikely friendship with Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), the actor who participated in a ruse orchestrated by inventor Aldrich Killian, to portray a terrifying crime lord known as the Mandarin in order to get revenge on his longtime rival, Tony Stark. Trevor Slattery still finds himself dealing with the aftermath of his notorious role, and the two have to navigate the shadow of Trevor’s past, while also trying to land the role of a lifetime. This offbeat premise opens the door for Marvel to think outside the box when creating a new superhero show. The story doesn’t feature massive action scenes or drawn origin stories; it focuses on the mundane life of an actor who just happens to have superpowers.

Creators, Dustin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, lean into the hilarity of the plot with a sharp sense of humor running throughout the entire series. Wonder Man dives head first into modern Hollywood, with a look in the life of a working actor. Complete with the hurdles, disappointments, and outlandish moments, that are all too common for those working in the film industry. The shows finds the humor in the bizarre situations that actors often find themselves in. The story places our leads in the common absurdities of the movie business and lets the laugh out loud moments ensue. Wonder Man is incredibly hilarious! A true comedic adventure into the bizarre world of both Hollywood and the MCU.

While the series pokes fun at the industry’s oddities and flaws, it’s also a love letter to the art of acting. The series is, at its core, about the highs and lows of an actor’s life and the meaning the true essence of the art form can provide to others. There is always a sincerity to the way the show tackles acting. It showcases the immersion, humanity, and power that acting can have on an individual and a mass audience. Wonder Man earnestly demonstrates the magic and true superpower of film and performance.

This is underscored by Abdul-Mateen II’s incredible performance as Simon Williams. Simon is a surprisingly dense Marvel character. A multi-layered character that doesn’t always follow the traditional path of a lead superhero. Simon’s complexity is expertly communicated with Yahya’s portrayal. He openly examines the struggles, motivations, and heart of Simon Williams with subtlety and realism that are felt throughout the series. Abdul-Mateen II really gets to let loose with his acting chops, with Simon navigating a chaotic world that is filled with life-or-death stakes both in the literal sense and in the emotional sense. Simon’s balance of his difficulties and passions is at the heart of the story.

Wonder Man is truly one of Marvel’s best shows. The show is an unconventional, eccentric exploration of the passion behind performing arts and the sometimes strange challenges it takes to pursue it. Wonder Man steers away from the typical superhero formula to create a singular Marvel show that is truly memorable. Mateen’s performance drives the show forward and invites audiences to root for an uncommon hero.

The show is non-stop funny, with moments that will have you scratching your head and laughing out loud. Wonder Man puts so much heart behind the comedy and crafts a captivating, compelling series that is undoubtedly a standout. In a year that features one of Marvel’s biggest projects ever, they may have found its best in one of its smallest.

Wonder Man premieres on Disney+ on January 27.
