Star Wars Celebration 2025 in has officially started and kicked it off with a major surprise reveal that sent fans into hyperspace.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni were joined on stage by director Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine, Stranger Things) to officially announce Star Wars: Starfighter, a brand-new theatrical installment in the Star Wars saga starring Ryan Gosling.
Star Wars: Starfighter Relase Date
Set to hit theaters on May 28, 2027, Star Wars: Starfighter will be a standalone adventure set approximately five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. The film introduces all-new characters in a previously unexplored era of the galaxy, giving both longtime fans and newcomers a fresh entry point into the evolving Star Wars timeline.
Gosling, who made a surprise appearance on stage during the panel for The Mandalorian& Grogu, teased his mysterious new character, which got the crowd hyped. From Blade Runner 2049 to stepping into the plastic-fantastic world of Barbie, Gosling has shown that he can transform into any character within any world.
Levy, hot off the heels of helming Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, brings his action-comedy sensibility and emotional storytelling to the Star Wars universe. Production on the film is expected to begin this fall.
Star Wars: Starfighter is one of several theatrical projects in development at Lucasfilm, joining upcoming films from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Taika Waititi, and a new trilogy led by Simon Kinberg. However, with Gosling on board and Levy at the helm, Starfighter is already shaping up to be an exciting new chapter in this ever expanding galaxy.
