The new Tomb Raider film starring Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander(The Danish Girl) has just completed production with eight months to go before the film’s official release.
Paramount Pictures were responsible for the previous two Tomb Raider films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life that starred Angelina Jolie and followed the archaeologist heroine on a series of global missions. The films successfully grossed a total of $432 million in the box office.
The film is based off the legendary video game franchise of the same name. The first game was released in 1996 by London-based company Eidos, and quickly became the one of the most successful video games of all time. A recent reboot of the series, following the origin of Lara Croft, released in 2013 and sold over 5 million copies. The most current game, Rise of the Tomb Raider, launched in 2015 and is available on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PC.
Tomb Raider is scripted by Transformers: The Last Knight writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, MGM, and GK Films, and directed by Norwegian’s own Roar Uthuag. Uthuag is best known for his 2015 acclaimed disaster drama The Wave.
Dominic West (300), Walton Goggins (Django Unchained), Daniel Wu (Into the Badlands), and Hannah John-Kamen(Killjoys) also star in the upcoming film, set to release on March 16, 2018.
