A television show adaptation of the Oscar-nominated indie film My Beautiful Laundrette(1985) is currently in the works, with Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) attached as a writer and main lead. The original film starred Gordon Warnecke as Omar, a Pakistani-Brit who runs a laundromat with his white boyfriend, Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis). Nanjiani is set to star and co-write, and Stephen Gaghan is set to executive produce. The adaptation is being produced with entertainment company Super Deluxe, which is known for creating strange, sometimes satirical comedic content.
Screenplay writer for the original LaundretteHanif Kureishi is also executive producing, as well as Alec Berg (“Silicon Valley”). This marks quite a big leap for Super Deluxe, as they attempt to transition from short web content to television series. The studio just sold a supernatural drama titled Chambers to Netflix, and are currently looking for a buyer for a scripted comedy The Passage.
Nanjiani’s Laundrette is still looking for a buyer to distribute the series, so it might be a while before it’s actually released, but it doesn’t make it any less timely. The original film touched on issues like homophobia and immigration, so it seems like the perfect time for an adaptation.
