In an interview with Vanity Fair, James Cameron explained that the future of the Avatar series, and most of its sequels, is in the hands of its fans. According to Cameron, “If Avatar 2 and 3 don’t makeenough money, there’s not going to be a 4 and 5.”
The production process has already started on 2 and 3, and Avatar 2 is expected to premiere in 2020. The films will apparently be standalone narratives that exist within the same Avatar universe. Cameron says the films
“build across to a greater kind of meta narrative, but they’re fully formed films in their own right, unlike, say, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, where you really just had to go, ‘Oh, shit, all right, well I guess I better come back next year.’”
Avatar is still the highest grossing film of all time, and the second highest grossing film when adjusted for inflation, so it’s possible that James Cameron has nothing to worry about when it comes to making money.
