Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk has hit another milestone. The film has surpassed the $500 million mark worldwide. The World War II set film centers around the evacuation and rescue of roughly 300,000 stranded Allied troops in France with the use of 800 boats from England.

The Warner Bros. flick was made to the tune of $150 million, so its box office haul is good for the studio, especially during a year where the summer box office was producing low numbers specifically in August.

Another major breakthrough for Dunkirk was that the film had the biggest 70MM release in over two decades, on top of being one of the most highly-anticipated movies released this year.

Even though it’s a bit early for awards season chatter, thus far there have been no predictions for a ‘clear’ frontrunner in the race for Best Picture. However, there is no doubt that Dunkirk may very well be in the mix when the time comes.

Starring Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, Fionn Whitehead and Tom Hardy, Dunkirk was released on July 21, 2017 and is still screening in theaters.
