The director of the critical acclaimed The Rider will be writing and directing the biopic, which will follow Reeves as a young slave who fled to the Indian Territory in search of freedom and becomes one of the greatest lawmen in the American West.

Zhao is writing and will direct the pic, which will follow Reeves’ journey as a young man born into slavery in 1838 who fled to the Indian Territory in search of freedom and went on to become one of the greatest lawmen of the American West.

Zhao’s directorial debut Songs My Brothers Taught Me debuted at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and received positive responses and praised for it’s honest portrayal of young Native Americans living at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Her second feature, The Rider, earned her several nominations and wins during the festival circuit.
