Black Panther has been out for over a month now and it still breaking records! We all knew the film was leading up to be monumental for comicbook films, but that does not make its reception and success any less gratifying to see unfold. This week marks another milestone for the film. Variety has confirmed that Black Panther has become Twitter’s most tweeted about film in the site’s 12-year history. The film has managed to generate more than 35 million tweets. If that does not impress you then consider the fact that it surpassed the Twitter buzz of both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi (who now respectively sit at the No. 2 and 3 spots). A film with a large diverse cast generating more online digits than a Star Wars film? Up until now, this has been unheard of.
The 3 top hashtags leading this wave were #BlackPanther, #Wakanda, and #WakandaForever. The most tweeted about characters were Black Panther, Shuri, and Killmonger. Marvel Studios has proven to be experts at selling C to D list comicbook characters and eventually boosting their name upon A lists. For those who are unaware of this terminology- saying that a character is on marvel’s C or D list does not mean that they are bad or weak. This is a general ranking on how popular or well known they are to a non-comicbook reading crowd. For example, it is obvious that more people in the general audience know who Spider-Man is than those who recognize a D list name like Howard the Duck. The fact that former not as well known characters like Shuri and Killmonger became the film’s most tweeted about names is an amazing sign. They truly are stand out roles and they deserve all the love and popularity that came their way.
There are a few more official Twitter stats to note. The U.S lead the online buzz followed by the U.K and Thailand. The day that generated the most tweets was Feb. 18th, the Sunday of its opening week. The most tweeted emojis perfectly sum up the film: the flame, black heart, and crowns.
