The age of Maul is here! Star Wars:Maul – Shadow Lord has finally arrived and it is an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan.

The show expertly breaks down the Maul character, all while delivering a wide-ranging crime thriller. Maul’s complexity and motivations are explored and portrayed perfectly by the creative team and Sam Witwer. The addition of the young Jedi, Devon Izara, gives Maul an opportunity to break down his philosophy on the Force.

I got the chance to speak to Maul himself, Sam Witwer, as well as the new exciting addition to Star Wars, Devon (Gideon Adlon), about their thoughts on Maul’s perspective of the Force, and if it makes more sense when put up against the Empire.

Watch the full interview with Sam Witwer and Gideon Adlon below:

I asked Adlon to tell me why she thinks Maul’s philosophy can be so appealing to Jedi who survived Order 66.

“He’s extremely alluring to Devon because she sees part of herself in him, but she doesn’t understand what that part is or why she relates to this person. It becomes more present because she’s not afraid of him. She’s not afraid to go against him. It becomes a part of her ever evolving origin story,” she said.

Maul’s anger has always been a major part of his power, so I asked Witwer if that anger is something that is appropriate knowing that the Empire deserves to feel that rage.

Witwer shared, “He speaks words that feel absolutely true. He comes from his own truth. Sideous lies all the time, Maul actually speaks the truth a lot. The problem Maul has is that there is no nuance to his truth. There’s no taking the time to sit and think about the implications of his truth.”

Be sure to tune in for Star Wars:Maul – Shadow Lord. The first two episodes premiered on Disney+ on April 6.
