A Minecraft Movie has taken theaters by storm!
Prior to the film’s release, Geeks of Color had the opportunity to chat with some of the cast and crew about their work on the movie, including the movie’s director, Jared Hess.
Hess kindly shared his experience on the set of A Minecraft Movie, what he was most proud of in bringing the film to life on the big screen, the stellar animation design, production design, VFX design departments, the Easter eggs throughout the movie, and much more!

There were many departments that were vital to the making A Minecraft Movie succeed. Hess touched upon their importance and how it was working alongside them that really made the movie thrive, and something he was proud of.
“Oh, man, gosh! Well, we had such an amazing production design team. And, you know, like, just all the ideas – everybody that worked on the film all had such a personal experience with the game, and so we wanted everybody, every department, whether it was, you know, the visual effects department, the animation department, the production design department, to bring what they love about the game to it and and celebrate it in such a cool way. So the movie’s packed with details,” Hess shared.
Hess had an amazing cast at his disposal that included Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen (just to name a few).
Regarding working with Black and Momoa, Hess said, “Yeah, so working with Jack, I mean, the dude’s a quadruple threat. And he’s just this insane musician. You got to be able to use what’s in his bag, man and, you know, just have fun with it. And with Jason, you know, it’s like, here’s a guy that kicks butt in every movie that you’ve ever seen with him. And it was like, ‘Oh, it’d be so fun to see him get his butt kicked by chicken jockeys and pigs and zombies.’ And so, we just ran with it. And once we kind of landed on those ideas, it was like, ‘Let’s just have fun and keep chasing the best idea.’ And working with these guys was just amazing.”
