If you’ve been following the trend of battle royale games coming to systems everywhere, then you probably know about the bad blood between Epic Games’ Fortnite and Bluehole’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG. After months of speculation, PUBG has officially filed a lawsuit against Epic Games for copyright infringement.
According to a statement made to the Korea Times, Bluehole and the PUBG Corporation filed the suit back in January, and the information is only now becoming public.
As for whether or not Fortnite copies enough from PUBG to allege copyright infringement is for the courts to decide – but there is some information that may tip the scales. Epic said in their initial announcements of Fortnite: Battle Royale that the free game mode was inspired by the developers’ enjoyment of playing PUBG.
Fortnite itself ended up overtaking PUBG in popularity despite coming second; Fortnite’s main mode is actually a tower-defense game. The battle royale mode proved massively more popular to fans.
