Days before Bayonetta‘s release on the Nintendo Switch, Platinum Games’ Director and Game Designer Hideki Kamiya opens up about the funding of Bayonetta 2.
Seemingly spurred by a request from a fan to see a physical release for Bayonetta in the U.S., similar to what is currently available in the UK. Kamiya responded initially with a concise message of, “Tell PUBLISHER. We’re Developer,” before coming back a few minutes later with a little insight into what that means.
Tell PUBLISHER. We're DEVELOPER. RT @rodrigoibarraSV hey we also want a physical versión of Bayonetta 1 for #NintendoSwitch in America. Pleaseeeeee make it posible #Bayonetta we LOVE BAYONETTA , WE LOVE PLATINUM GAMES, WE LOVE SEGA, WE LOVE NINTENDO https://t.co/k2QjINHnur

“I’ve got something I want to tell you all. It’s about Bayonetta 3,” is how Kamiya kicked off his 15 post thread. Overall the thread was less about Bayonetta 3 and more regarding the path which brought Bayonetta into the Nintendo family of exclusives. In the thread, Kamiya reveals that prior to Nintendo’s acquisition of the title, Bayonetta 2 was originally in development as a multiplatform release. However, partway through the games’ development, Sega suspended production for an unknown reason.
Following this suspension Nintendo swooped in a funded the Bayonetta 2‘s development until completion and, as we know, released it as an exclusive for the Wii U. Nintendo is now the sole funder for Bayonetta 3, a game which Kamiya said he’s unable to express how happy he is to be able to make.
