Reyn Doi On His Role In ‘That ’90s Show’ & The Show’s Future – Interview

It’s time to go back to Point Place!

Back in 1998, a small sitcom starring Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Laura Prepon called That 70’s Show took television by storm, telling the heartwarming adventures and misadventures of a group of teenage friends who constantly fell in love, argued with their parents and sat together for, um, knowledge rotations. The series ran for eight seasons, cementing its place as one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time. Even if some cast members were forced to leave their spots as main cast members before the story could reach its conclusion, That ’70s Show still closed out its arcs with plenty of heart.

25 years later, Netflix takes audiences back to Point Place, this time to focus on the daughter of the main characters from the previous show. Leia Forman stays with her grandparents, Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) and Red (Kurtwood Smith), in an attempt to escape going to Space Camp with her dad, Eric (Topher Grace). During her stay in her grandparents’ house, Leia meets kids who live around town, including Gwen (Ashley Aufderheide), Jay (Mace Coronel) and Ozzie (Reyn Doi). Throughout the summer, Leia learns how to love their new friends, making the group a very funny combination of charismatic personalities.

Geeks of Color had the opportunity of speaking to Reyn Doi. The actor spoke to us about his experience working on the show, as well as the iconic moment he got to share with Rupp when his character, Ozzie, comes out as gay to Kitty Forman. When talking about what he knew about Ozzie while auditioning for the role, Doi talked about his experience with getting to know the character with just a few details. Doi said, “My manager first asked me if I felt comfortable playing a gay character. That’s sort of the first information that I got. But when I did the audition, I just thought he was so unique. I did feel I could become creative with the character.”

When asked about how he felt about the audience’s positive reaction to the show, the actor was excited to see how people were enjoying his and the cast’s work on the series. Doi shared, “I felt great! I started receiving so many comments of ‘Ozzie’s my favorite! You did such a good job!’ The positive comments make all the waiting process worth it, and all of your hard work worth it to hear those reactions from the fans.”

Doi was clearly satisfied with how much people love Ozzie, and the character will return for the upcoming second season of the show. The first season of That ’90s Show is currently streaming on Netflix!
