Kate Walsh & Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu Talk Season 3 Of ‘Emily In Paris’ – Interview

The new season of Emily in Paris is finally upon us!

Of course, this season has us wondering what exactly we can expect from Emily’s bosses, Madeline and Sylvie. Well, who better to get the scoop from than the actresses themselves, Kate Walsh and Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu.

I had the pleasure of chatting with the duo about the new season of the show, the journey their characters have been on throughout the series, their favourite moments of the season and filming together.

Viewers of the series know that Madeline and Sylvie have had their fair share of disagreements throughout the series, continuing to battle it out about work with Emily usually caught in the middle. In reference to the two characters butting heads this season and filming the scenes together, Walsh said, “It’s just great writing, and whenever there’s conflict, it’s really fun to play. Nobody wants to watch a scene or play a scene about two people that are just like, ‘Isn’t life great?!’ and we’re just agreeing with each other, no. So, it’s really fun and I think that beyond the conflict, that you really felt the story is just so good.”

A constant theme in this season of Emily in Paris is growth and the characters in the series having to make decisions that will impact their personal lives in ways they might not want. But in the end, they are decisions that are for them. For Leroy-Beaulieu’s Sylvie, these decisions are both professional and personal. Leroy-Beaulieu shared, “I guess it’s a normal evolution of any human being, and Darren [Star] is really good at that because he always puts his characters in places where they have to sort problems that are huge, and obstacles that are incredible. And, there’s a moment, as we were saying earlier, there’s a moment where you think, ‘Oh, we found peace!’ No, you haven’t! And a lot of scenes are like that.”

With the changes that both their characters experience this season, there is certainly a lot to be said about what might be the biggest changes for Madeline and Sylvie this season. About Madeline’s changes, Walsh said, “Well, mine’s gotten more kind of far out there, I think. [laughs] I’m blaming the hormones, the pregnancy hormones–I mean, she is whacked out. Madeline is mad, mad Madeline. [laughs] I remember Darren going, ‘I kind of see her as Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl.’ And I was like, ‘Hmm…it’s a little different than that.’ But I do think especially coming to Paris and having the costumes, you know, she really is feeling herself and really goes for it.”

Leroy-Beaulieu spoke about a new side of Sylvie that we get to see more of this season. Leroy-Beaulieu said, “Well, Sylvie is more vulnerable. She shows her vulnerability which is fun because it’s a totally different colour of her personality which I really love. And behind that armour, there is a lot of vulnerability and behind that strength, there’s even insecurity, I would say, sometimes. But she’s just a strong person and she’s very brave, and she goes for life and fights for herself, you know?”

Finally, when Walsh and Leroy-Beaulieu were asked to describe this season of the show with one word they chose, “complicated.” Just how complicated was this season? Well, you’ll just have to binge it and see for yourselves.

Season 3 of Emily in Paris is now streaming on Netflix.
