Interview: Gael García Bernal Discusses ‘Werewolf By Night’ & Incorporating His Own Culture To The Character

Renowned Mexican actor, Gael García Bernal, joins the MCU in the special spooky presentation, Werewolf by Night! This special is one of the few directorial projects of long-time composer, Michael Giacchino. The film introduces the character of Jack Russell (Bernal) who was conceived back in the early ’70s. The short opens the door for the darker, underworld aspect of the Marvel world.

I got the chance to sit down with the lead, Gael García Bernal, to discuss his character and how he was able to incorporate his own culture into the character of Jack. He told me how casting was so important in these projects because it allows the actor to add their own personality to the original character.

The moment in the short film where Jack lets out a small phrase might be the best use of Spanish I’ve seen in a superhero film. It shows a very natural side of the character and Bernal told me that it made sense that Jack would be able to speak Spanish having been alive for so long.

I also brought up the possibility of the Werewolf joining more MCU projects in the future, specifically with Mahershala Ali’s Blade. Check out his response and our conversation about what he would like to see done with the character in future Marvel films.

The official synopsis for Werewolf By Night

On a dark and somber night, a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the foreboding Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader. In a strange and macabre memorial to the leader’s life, the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic—a hunt that will ultimately bring them face to face with a dangerous monster. Inspired by horror films of the 1930s and 1940s, the chilling special aims to evoke a sense of dread and the macabre, with plenty of suspense and scares along the way as we explore a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Werewolf By Night is now Streaming on Disney+.
