Interview: Olga Merediz And Jimmy Smits Talk ‘In The Heights’, Going From Broadway To The Big Screen & More
Jon M. Chu’s latest film, In the Heights, is now in theaters and streaming on HBO Max!
I had a chance to sit down with stars of In The Heights, Olga Merediz and Jimmy Smits who play Abuela Claudia and Kevin Rosario.
During our chat with the two, Smits shared how much being part of this film meant to him and how this film will cement itself as one of the generational films for the Latinx community. Olga Merediz was already familiar with the character of Abuela because she played the role on Broadway for many years, but Merediz shared what it was like bringing the character from the stage to the big screen, and how the character has grown over the years.

In The Heights Official Synopsis
Lights up on Washington Heights, a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big…The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi, who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.
The film stars Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera, Olga Merediz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Gregory Diaz IV, Stephanie Beatriz, Dascha Polanco, Jimmy Smits, and Lin‑Manuel Miranda.
