Report: Michael Keaton in Talks to Reprise Role as Batman in ‘The Flash’

Yes, you read that headline correctly! 30 years after wearing the iconic cowl for the last time in 1992’s Batman Returns, Michael Keaton is in talks to return as Batman in The Flash!

The Wrap is reporting that Keaton is in early stages to appear alongside Ezra Miller in the upcoming movie which is set to be directed by It: Chapter Two filmmaker, Andy Muschietti.

If the deal does go through, The Hollywood Reporter says that his role could expand past The Flash and into several other DC projects similar to how the MCU used Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Batgirl is one the projects in development that we could see Keaton appear in. There has been no word on how big or small his role will be in The Flash, but this is exciting news nonetheless.

It is said that The Flash will be inspired by the 2011 DC crossover event “Flashpoint”, which will show us Miller’s Barry Allen traveling back in time to prevent the death of his mother. This causes world-altering consequences that create another universe which would be protected by Keaton’s Batman, now 30 years older.

In case you were wondering, this won’t have any affect on the upcoming Batman movie from Matt Reeves featuring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. In fact, according to The Wrap, Reeves’ Batman is still the central focus of the future.

One thing this film will be doing is introducing and familiarizing audiences with the Multiverse. In DC’s Multiverse, 52 Earths (all occupying the same space) are separated due to them vibrating at different frequencies. Each one of these earths has its own set of heroes and villains. Besides the comics themselves, “The Arrowverse” introduced the Multiverse when it was confirmed that shows like Supergirl and Black Lightning were in separate universes from shows such as Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.

The Flash is eyeing a 2021 production start, subject to COVID-19 safety protocols. With Muschietti in the directing chair, The Flash script is being penned by Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson. Barbara Muschietti and Michael Disco are producing.
