Hulu Tests ‘Watch Party’ Feature for Ad-Free Subscribers

Hulu is now testing its Hulu Watch Party feature. Currently, the Watch Party option is only available for people 18 or older with ad-free subscriptions. Those who have Hulu with ads in their subscription would have to upgrade their service in order to enjoy it.

Hulu Watch Party allows up to eight people with ad-free subscriptions to watch a show or movie and chat together.

It’s fairly simple and requires no extension to download.

  1. Launch Hulu.
  2. Pick a show or movie you want to stream.
  3. Go to the Details page of that title.
  4. Click the “Watch Party” icon.
  5. Copy and paste the link provided and share it with the people you want in your party.

In addition to the live chat, users can pause, fast-forward, or rewind without it affecting the others streaming. There’s even a convenient “Click to Catch Up” button in the chat, so a user can jump to where the rest of the party is. This way, poor internet connections or other variables won’t hinder the whole party.

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic forcing people to social distance and stay indoors, people can no longer hang out with their friends and enjoy watching shows or movies together. Streaming services are now answering the call to help make it easier for those missing these interactions.

Netflix released a similar feature, Netflix Party, in an effort to bring people safely together. HBO has also signed a deal with Scener to get their own virtual watch party going.

It’s uncertain when Hulu will stop testing this feature, but it’s available now to adults with no-ad subscriptions.
