Ruby Rose Leaves The CW’s ‘Batwoman’ After One Season
Shocking everybody, Ruby Rose has decided to leave the CW’s Batwoman after it just got renewed for its second season. Rose played the iconic Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman in the show, impressing fans with the solid pilot after her debut in the 2018 Elsewords crossover.
Rose gave no reason for her departure, but officially stated, “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles. I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created. Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful.”

It’s unknown why she left, but since being cast as lesbian Kate Kane, Rose has received intense backlash from cyberbullies mocking her gender-fluidity and preference for feminine pronouns. “When I got cast as a lesbian in Batwoman, I didn’t know that being a gender-fluid woman meant that I couldn’t be a lesbian because I’m not a woman — not considered lesbian enough,” she said in a 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I’m a woman that identifies as a woman. I’m not trans. But if being gender-fluid means that I can’t identify as a woman at any point, then I guess I can’t be that.”
The CW now has to recast Rose’s Batwoman.
Together, Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. and The CW officially stated: “Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best. The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we—along with the show’s talented creative team—look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”
