‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Live-Action Series Coming to Disney+

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is coming back!

It was announced earlier today that a live-action adaption of Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is coming to Disney+! The author of the beloved young adult series, Rick Riordan (@rickriordan), made the announcement on Twitter.

“We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one,” he says in the video that was posted.

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series follows 12-year-old Percy as he discovers he’s the son of Poseidon, learns about his powers, and goes on fantastic quests with his friends.

Many critics compared the world Riordan built to that of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, as they’re both fantasies that feature spectacular kids. It’s certainly up for debate, but many fans feel as if Percy Jackson franchise should’ve been as big as the Harry Potter series. Under 20th Century Fox, Percy Jackson has had two live-action films based on the first two books, The Lighting Thief and Sea of Monsters. While the two films were successful, they weren’t nearly as successful as the Harry Potter film adaptations for a variety of reasons.

The Disney-Fox merger deal from last year allows for a Percy Jackson series on Disney+ and it’s likely that many fans feel this is their time to shine with the young adult fantasy genre.
