4/20 Celebration: Best Movies to Watch on Netflix While You’re Baked

Times are stressful right now and we’re all looking for different outlets to help us pass the time. Luckily 4/20 is right around the corner. Usually during 4/20 you will catch me kicking back and watching a bunch of movies with a joint or two to accompany me.

In the spirit of 4/20 (and since everyone is stuck inside), I made a list of 20 movies and divided them up into 4 different groups (you get it?). Some of these movies might not be considered “stoner” movies but I like to watch them when I partake in the Devil’s lettuce, so I figured I’d share them with you. Happy 4/20!

Check out the list below:

Serious / Thinkers

Rapper Snoop Dogg immersed himself in Rastafarian culture and changed his name to Snoop Lion as he made his first reggae album. If you’re looking for a music-filled documentary to enjoy on the glorious day, this is the doc for you!

Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a thief with the rare ability to enter people’s dreams and steal their secrets from their subconscious. His skill has made him a hot commodity in the world of corporate espionage but has also cost him everything he loves. Cobb gets a chance at redemption when he is offered a seemingly impossible task: Plant an idea in someone’s mind. This movie is a trip even when you’re sober so watching it on an elevated mindset will make for an exciting experience.

We are Your Friends

Young Cole Carter (Zac Efron) dreams of hitting the big time as a Hollywood disc jockey, spending his days and nights hanging with buddies and working on the one track that will set the world on fire. Opportunity comes knocking when he meets James Reed, a charismatic DJ who takes the 23-year-old under his wing. This underrated coming of age story is filled with a great EDM and cool visuals that will keep you mesmerized from start to finish!

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle

It would be incredibly disrespectful to not have this movie on the list. For the few unfamiliar with the storyline, its about a nerdy accountant named Harold (John Cho) and his irresponsible friend, Kumar (Kal Penn). While they were getting stoned watching television, they see a commercial for White Castle. Convinced there must be one nearby, the two set out on a late-night odyssey that takes them deep into New Jersey. The duo end up getting into a myriad of shenanigans before they get close to their beloved sliders.

Another stoner classic. This story is about an unemployed pot-smoking slacker and amateur drummer, Anthony Stoner (Tommy Chong) who ditches his strict parents and hits the road, eventually meeting his kindred spirit, Pedro de Pacas (Cheech Marin). While the drug-ingesting duo is soon arrested for possession of marijuana, Anthony and Pedro get released on a technicality, allowing them to continue their many misadventures and ultimately compete in a rock band contest, where they perform the raucous tune: “Earache My Eye”.

Get Him to the Greek

An ambitious executive at a record company, Aaron Green (Jonah Hill) gets what looks like an easy assignment: He must escort British rock legend Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) to L.A.’s Greek Theatre for the first stop on a lucrative comeback-concert tour. Snow, however, has different plans. Learning his true love is in California, the rocker vows to win her back before starting the tour, forcing Aaron to pull out all the stops to get Snow on stage in time.

Defying the very notion of good taste, Scary Movie out-parodies the pop culture parodies with a no-holds barred assault on the most popular images and talked-about moments from recent films, television and commercials. The film boldly fires barbs at the classic scenes from Scream, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Blair Witch Project, then goes on to mock a whole myriad of teen movie clichés, no matter the genre.

Mac and Devin Go To High School

A smart teenager (Wiz Khalifa) tries to help a long-term student (Snoop Dogg) finally graduate from high school. So, two of the biggest potheads in the game joined forces to give us a marijuana-filled comedy. It is an essential must watch for 4/20!

Step Brothers

Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell) and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) have one thing in common – they are both lazy, unemployed leeches who still live with their parents. When Brennan’s mother and Dale’s father marry and move in together, it turns the overgrown boys’ worlds upside down. Their insane rivalry and narcissism pull the new family apart, forcing them to work together to reunite their parents.

Soul Plane

Following a ridiculously awful flight that leads to his pet’s death, Nashawn Wade (Kevin Hart) files a lawsuit against the airline, and wins a multi-million dollar settlement. Determined to create a better flying experience, Nashawn starts his own airlin – one that caters to an African-American clientele. Going into business with a tricked-out plane piloted by the smooth Capt. Mack (Snoop Dogg), the airline hits a snag when it has to deal with the family of Elvis Hunkee (Tom Arnold).

Hot Rod

For Rod Kimball (Andy Samberg), performing stunts is a way of life, even though he is rather accident-prone. Poor Rod cannot even get any respect from his stepfather, Frank (Ian McShane), who beats him up in weekly sparring matches. When Frank falls ill, Rod devises his most outrageous stunt yet to raise money for Frank’s operation – and then Rod will kick Frank’s butt.

A Haunted House

A Haunted House is a 2013 American found footage parody comedy horror film directed by Michael Tiddes and written, produced and starring Marlon Wayans.

The Lonely Island Presents: The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience is a Netflix special by comedy/rap group, The Lonely Island. Billed as a “visual poem”, the special is directed by Mike Diva and Akiva Schaffer, and stars Andy Samberg and Schaffer as Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, respectively.

Action Movies

The Matrix

Neo (Keanu Reeves) believes that Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), an elusive figure considered to be the most dangerous man alive, can answer his question: “What is the Matrix?” Neo is contacted by Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), a beautiful stranger who leads him into an underworld where he meets Morpheus. They fight a brutal battle for their lives against a cadre of viciously intelligent secret agents. It is a truth that could cost Neo something more precious than his life.

The Ip Man Franchise

Ip Man is a 2008 Hong Kong biographical martial arts film based on the life of Ip Man. The second film in the series (titled Ip Man 2), was released in April 2010, and a third installment (titled Ip Man 3) was released in 2015, and a fourth film (Ip Man 4) that was released in 2019. Watch them!

Godzilla: Planet of the Monster

The human race takes to the stars and abandons Earth after Godzilla wreaks havoc upon the planet. Thousands of years later, they return from space to destroy the giant monster and reclaim their home.

Super Hero Movies

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse

Check out our review of the film here!

The animation in this movie is on a different level from anything I’ve ever seen before, and Into the Spider-Verse is the epitome of what it means to bring a comic book to life. Due to the film being an animated one, they weren’t restricted by the realistic limitations you see in live-action movies. This allowed them to really just have fun with it, and go all out. 10/10 would recommend watching it during 4/20!

Incredibles 2

Incredibles 2 is a 2018 animated superhero film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Written and directed by Brad Bird, it is the sequel to The Incredibles (2004) and the second full-length installment of the franchise. Incredibles 2 was a worthy follow-up to the original and it is always great to visit while enjoying 4/20.

Avengers: Infinity War

SPOILERS: Just stop it after Thanos snaps his fingers. No need to revisit that hurt while being high.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

As bass guitarist for a garage-rock band, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) has never had trouble getting a girlfriend; usually, the problem is getting rid of them. But when Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) skates into his heart, he finds she has the most troublesome baggage of all: an army of ex-boyfriends who will stop at nothing to eliminate him from her list of suitors.

Honorable Mentions

Good Burger

When Mondo Burger sets up across the street, sneaky Dexter and burger-obsessed Ed realize they need to fight to keep their fast food joint going. Their new secret sauce might be the answer, but not if Mondo can grab it.

Kung Fu Hustle

When the hapless Sing (Stephen Chow) and his dim-witted pal, Bone (Feng Xiaogang), try to scam the residents of Pig Sty Alley into thinking they’re members of the dreaded Axe Gang, the real gangsters descend on this Shanghai slum to restore their fearsome reputation. What gang leader Brother Sum (Chan Kwok-kwan) doesn’t know is that three legendary retired kung fu masters (Yu Xing, Dong Zhihua, Chiu Chi-ling) live anonymously in this decrepit neighborhood and don’t take kindly to interlopers.

The Hangover

Two days before his wedding, Doug (Justin Bartha) and three friends (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis) drive to Las Vegas for a wild and memorable stag party. In fact, when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning, they can’t remember a thing; nor can they find Doug. With little time to spare, the three hazy pals try to re-trace their steps and find Doug so they can get him back to Los Angeles in time to walk down the aisle.
