Live-Action Superhero and Comic Book Movies of 2019

2019 looks to be another great year for superhero and comic-book movies. Here is your guide to all the heroic (or not so heroic) adventures that you will be going on this coming year in the order of release.

Glass is the third instalment in the Unbreakable trilogy, which culminates the stories of M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and Unbreakable. In the epic conclusion, David Dunn (Bruce Willis) must stop both Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) and the Horde (James McAvoy) from becoming the true villains (or heroes) they aspire to be.

If you’re familiar with Shyamalan’s work then you might know that his movies promise tons of twists and turns, and Glass promises to up the ante.

Glass was released on January 18, 2019, by Universal Pictures. Read our review here.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel is the most anticipated movie for GoC, partly because it is the first solo female superhero film to come from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain Marvel promises to be the start of new and interesting stories for our MCU heroes, and she’s their most powerful hero yet.

The film is set in 1995 and will follow the story of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), who finds herself on Earth after the Skrulls (an alien race) have decided to invade the planet. She’ll find herself forming interesting allies with a young Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) on the path to discovering who she truly is and saving the world.

Captain Marvel flies into theatres on March 8, from Marvel Studios/Disney.

Fast Color

This drama-thriller follows the story of a woman forced to go on the run after her superpowers have been discovered by a shady organization. Eventually, she has to go back home as it is the only place she has left to hide. Julia Hart (Miss Stevens) directs the feature based on a script she and her husband, producer Jordan Horowitz (La La Land), wrote. The film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Cloverfield Paradox, A Wrinkle in Time), Lorraine Toussaint (Selma), Saniyya Sidney (Hidden Figures), Christopher Denham (Money Monster), and David Strathairn (Godzilla).

Fast Color premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) on March 10, 2018, and currently holds a 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fast Color will be released on March 29, by Codeblack Films.

2019 is the year of the Captain Marvels as the latest entry from the DCEU, Shazam! is fast approaching. The hero formerly known as Captain Marvel will get his big-screen debut with Zachary Levi playing the titular role.

Asher Angel plays Billy Batson, a teenage boy who can transform via the magic word “Shazam” into an adult superhero (Levi). With the help of his best friend and foster brother, Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer), they must learn how to use Shazam’s newfound powers to defeat the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

Shazam! will be released on April 5, by Warner Bros.

Hellboy is back and this time he is facing an ancient medieval sorceress who is intent on destroying all of mankind.

This latest iteration stars David Harbour and this version will be a reboot of the Hellboy franchise that began with Guillermo del Toro’s 2004 film, Hellboy. Harbour will be joined by Milla Jovovich as Nimue, Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimio, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan and Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm (Hellboy’s adoptive father).

Hellboy will be released in theatres April 12, by Lionsgate.

Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame is the end of an era. We might be saying our farewells to characters we’ve grown to know and love since 2008. It is safe to say it’ll be a bittersweet experience for MCU fans everywhere.

The Avengers (with the help of some unexpected additions) unite in order to defeat Thanos after the Mad Titan’s snap wiped half the galaxy’s population. Our favourite heroes will have to prove why they are known as ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’.

Avengers: Endgame hits theatres on April 26, from Marvel Studios/Disney.

Dark Phoenix

The fourth instalment in the prequel/new timeline era of the X-Men Universe will present us (for the second time) the Dark Phoenix storyline. The X-Men must face one of their own after Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) loses control of her powers and the dark entity known as Phoenix residing inside her grows stronger after an accident.

With the return of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and the addition of Jessica Chastain as the antagonist of the film, Dark Phoenix seems to be a promising new instalment to the franchise. Hopefully, one that will be “more faithful” to the story than The Last Stand.

Dark Phoenix will be unleashed on June 7, by 20th Century Fox

Spider-Man Far from Home

The sequel for Spider-Man Homecoming follows Peter Parker (Tom Holland) after the events of Infinity War. Peter goes on summer vacation to Europe with his classmates, and while abroad, teams up with Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) to battle the Elementals.

The most exciting part is that this will be one of the first MCU films set after the events of Infinity War and possibly Endgame.

Spider-Man Far From Home swings into theatres on July 5, from Sony.

The New Mutants

Delayed for more than a year to make the film more frightening, The New Mutants will follow the story of a group of teenagers, who after discovering they have mutant abilities, are held in a secret facility against their will. As the film progresses and they start to understand each other, they’ll fight to escape their past sins and save themselves in order to have a future.

The New Mutants released on August 2, by 20th Century Fox.

The Joker is set in 1981 and follows the story of a failed stand-up comedian, who when marginalized by society turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Nothing more is known about this film, but the few things that have been revealed in the past few months have been slowly giving people something to look forward to.

Joker promises to be a low-budget character study-type film centred around one of the most prominent villains in recent pop culture history, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker with Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz along for the ride.

Joker will be released on October 4, by Warner Bros.
